Assumes quarterly compounding, as most Indian bank FDs use.

Fixed deposits (FDs) are India's most popular safe investment — you deposit a lump sum with a bank for a fixed tenure and earn a guaranteed interest rate. Most Indian banks compound FD interest quarterly.

This FD calculator shows your exact maturity amount and total interest for any deposit, rate, and tenure, using the standard quarterly compounding formula that banks like SBI, HDFC, and ICICI follow.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD interest calculated?+

Bank FDs use quarterly compounding: A = P × (1 + r/4)^(4×t), where r is the annual rate and t is the tenure in years.

Is FD interest taxable?+

Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS if interest exceeds ₹40,000 (₹50,000 for senior citizens) in a year.

Can I break my FD early?+

Most banks allow premature withdrawal with a penalty of 0.5–1% on the interest rate. Some tax-saver FDs have a mandatory 5-year lock-in.
